Theory and Practice
Jewish identity and practice are rooted primarily in Torah Sheb'al Peh, which is itself presented and detailed in the Mishnah, related Tannaitic texts, and Amoraic and Talmudic texts. Despite the centrality of the Torah Sheb'al Peh, study of Mishnah and Talmud has been severely hampered by lack of professionally designed learning and teaching materials which reflect a coherent and consistent methodology to content and skills' acquisition.
V'Shinantam is the first step of a fully integrated curriculum for the study of Torah Sheb'al Peh for Grades 5-9 in diaspora schools, combining enriched content with a skills-based approach. The first two years of the program are dedicated to the study of Mishnah and other related sources of the Tannaim, and the third to fifth years are a separate program called V'Dibarta Bam, which bridges from study of Mishnah to fully independent study of Talmud and Rishonim.
- The overarching goals of V'Shinantam are to inculcate an enduring love of learning and Emunat Chachamim, by empowering the student to independent learning of Mishnah, related Tannaitic texts, and Amoraic and Talmudic texts.
- V'Shinantam materials include detailed teacher manuals, teaching aids such as posters, games, puzzles, musical components and heterogeneous classroom activities, and full color student workbooks. Teacher manuals are available in Hebrew and English, and student workbooks in easy Hebrew, and English, in both Regular and "Yeshivish" versions. The program is designed for three weekly lessons of 45 minutes apiece.
- V'Shinantam implementation involves a twenty academic-hour preservice on the theory and practicum of the program, acquisition of teacher and student packets, and a year of guidance for teachers to ensure quality results, including on site visits and phone and e-mail contact with teachers.
- V'Shinantam has been very successfully implemented in dozens of Israeli religious primary schools and now in sixty Diaspora schools of all types and affiliations. References and recommendations are available on request.
